By Mike Rosenbaum, About.com

American sprinters highlighted the 1999 event, led by Michael Johnson, who set a world record in the 400 (43.18 seconds). Johnson also anchored the victorious U.S. 4 x 400 relay team, giving him an all-time best nine World Championship gold medals. Meanwhile, Maurice Greene won both the 100- and 200-meter titles, then he anchored the first place U.S. 4 x 100 relay squad.
