The Top Finishers in the 1997 Women’s World Outdoor Track and Field Championship

In the 1997 World Outdoor Championships, Marion Jones earned her first World Championship medals by winning the 100-meter event and running the second leg of the victorious U.S. 4 x 100 relay squad. Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Merlene Ottey gained a record 14th World Championship medal by placing third in the 200. Ottey’s semifinal time of 22.26 seconds was the fastest time in the event overall, but she had to settle for a bronze medal when she ran 22.40 in the final.
