The Top Finishers in the 1997 Men’s World Outdoor Track and Field Championships

In the 1997 World Outdoor Championships, Sergey Bubka of the Ukraine came back from a 1996 Achilles tendon injury to remain a perfect 6-for-6 in World Outdoor competition by winning the pole vault gold medal. American Michael Johnson earned his seventh World Championship gold by winning the 400 meters. Other highlights included the fourth consecutive discus throw championship by Germany’s Lars Reidel and the third consecutive 10,000-meter gold medal for Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie.
