The Top Finishers in the 1995 Women’s World Outdoor Track and Field Championship

By , About.com Guide

Americans Kim Batten and Tonja Buford not only finished one-two in the 400-meter hurdles, but both broke Sally Gunnell’s world record. Batten won in 52.61 seconds, edging Buford (52.62). Inessa Kravets of the Ukraine also set a world mark, winning the triple jump with a leap measuring 15.5 meters (50 feet, 10¼ inches). American Gwen Torrence crossed the finish line first three times, in the 100, 200 and 4 x 100-meter relay, but only won two golds after being disqualified for stepping out of her lane in the 200. That mistake gave Jamaica’s Merlene Ottey, 35, the gold, giving her 13 World Championship medals. Another lane violation, by Maria Mutola in an 800-meter semifinal, ended Mutola’s 42-race win streak, opening the door for Cuba’s Ana Quirot to gain the gold medal.
