The 1993 Men’s World Outdoor Track and Field Championships

By , About.com Guide

The World Championships proved so popular it became an every-other-year event in 1993. Sergey Bubka, now competing for his native Ukraine following the break-up of the Soviet Union, made it 4-for-4 in World Outdoor competition by winning the pole vault championship while Switzerland’s Wernor Gunthor gained his third consecutive gold in the shot put. American Carl Lewis didn’t win a gold, but did gain his tenth World Championship medal by placing third in the 200. Great Britain’s Colin Jackson set a world 110-meter hurdles record of 12.91 seconds while the U.S. relay teams both reached the record books. The American 4 x 100 team won its semifinal in a world record-tying 37.40 before taking the gold in 37.48, while the 4 x 400 team set a new mark of 2:54.29.
