American Mike Conley in the "hop" phase of a triple jump in 1986. In this initial phase of the event once known as the "hop, skip and jump," the competitor hopes to achieve good horizontal distance without jumping too high. A high "hop" will result in a harder landing, which will lessen the momentum the jumper requires for the remaining two phases of the event.
