America's 2008 Olympic Decathlon and Heptathlon Standouts

Jim Thorpe. Bob Mathias. Bill Toomey. Bruce Jenner. Dan O'Brien. These are some of the great American athletes who've earned Olympic decathlon gold medals. In 2008, Bryan Clay joined the club.

1. Hyleas Fountain

With an all-time Olympic great as inspiration, Fountain has had her eye on the Olympic heptathlon event since she was seven years old.

2. Brian Clay

Healthy for the first time in more than a year, Clay was outstanding at the 2008 Olympic Trials and the Beijing Olympics.

3. Jacquelyn Johnson

Most pentathletes are multi-talented, but Johnson is particularly impressive, even by heptathlon standards. She earned 12 letters among three different high school sports, then played a season of college basketball in addition to four highly successful years on the Arizona State track and field squad.
