World Relays Competition Coming in May

By February 6, 2014

Relay competitions are exciting events at the end of most major international championships. But the relays are receiving their own spotlight this year with the first IAAF World Relays competitions in May.

The two-day event, taking place in the Bahamas May 24-25, will include five relays for both men and women. In addition to the standard 4 x 100-meter and 4 x 400-meter events run in the Olympics and World Championships, the World Relays will also include races in the 4 x 200, 4 x 800 and 4 x 1500. At least 43 countries plan to participate in the event, according to the IAAF.

In theory this is a fantastic idea

But having it @ end of May — when most countries save for USA, the Caribbean nations plus maybe Kenya — are just starting their outdoor campaigns leaves me to wonder whether this will just be a “tune up” for the rest of the season (Diamond League/Commonwealth Games/Euro Championships)?

In future better to hold it at season’ s end in late August, although I guess argument against that idea is “everybody will be too tired” to compete seriously at that time.

We shall see.

Perhaps in the future they may add some medley’s (sprint, distance) along with other creative relay events to broaden appeal
