Tokyo, the first Asian city to play host to the Olympic Games, will do so again in 2020. The International Olympic Committee awarded the event to Tokyo, after eliminating challengers Madrid and Istanbul. Tokyo held the Olympics in 1964, and also played host to the outdoor World Championships in 1991. Two other Asian nations, South Korea and China, have been Olympic hosts, in 1988 and 2008, respectively. The 2016 Olympics are set for Rio de Janeiro.
