The Frankfurt Marathon is one of the premier distance events each year, and this year's edition turned into individual triumphs for Kenya's Patrick Makau and Ethiopia's Meselech Melkamu.
On the men's side Makau, the world record-holder, trailed for most of Sunday's race but rallied to pass Ethiopia's Deressa Chimsa with about 3 kilometers remaining. Makau won in a pedestrian - by his standards - 2:06:08, finishing 44 seconds ahead of Chimsa.
Melkamu made an impressive marathon debut. The 2009 World Championship silver medalist at 10,000 meters ran with the leaders before moving in front at around the 37-kilometer mark on her way to victory in a course record 2:21:01.
