Long distance action continues to dominate the track and field scene in October, with recent marathons featuring some strong Ethiopian performances.
The highlight of the past two weeks was the Oct. 7 Chicago Marathon, in which Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede pulled away over the last 10 miles to win in a personal best and course record 2:04:38. On the women's side, Atsede Baysa of Ethiopia denied Russia's Lilya Shobukhova a fourth straight Chicago triumph. Baysa edged a fast-finishing Rita Jeptoo of Kenya by one second, winning in 2:22:03.
Kenya's Dickson Kiptolo Chumba scored a fast victory in The Netherlands on Oct. 14, winning the Eindhoven Marathon in a course record 2:05:46. Ethiopia's Aberume Mekuria won the women's race in 2:27:20. New Zealand's Mary Davies won the Oct. 15 Toronto Marathon in 2:28:56, while yet another Ethiopian, Sahle Warga, took the men's race in 2:10:36.
Major upcoming marathons include races in Frankfort (Oct. 28), New York (Nov. 4) and Beijing (Nov. 25).
