Aries Merritt's world record performance in the 110-meter hurdles took the spotlight in the Sept. 7 Memorial van Damme meet in Brussels, but the meet also produced the final 15 champions of the 2012 Diamond League season.
Merritt was one of those champs, as he tied with fellow American Jason Richardson in points, but Merritt gained the title by edging Richardson in victories, three to two. Usain Bolt won the 100-meter race as well as the season title with a 9.86-second performance in Brussels. The home fans also had something to cheer for as Kevin Borlee's victory in the 400-meter race gave the Belgian the Diamond Race championship.
Women's champions crowned in Brussels included Charonda Williams in the 200 meters, plus Pamela Jelimo (800 meters), Vivian Cheruiyot (5000 meters), Kaliese Spencer (400-meter hurdles), Silke Spiegelburg (pole vault), Chaunte Lowe (high jump), Olga Rypakova (triple jump) and Barbora Spotakova (javelin).
The other men's season champions included Aleksandr Menkov (long jump), Gerd Kanter (discus), Paul Kipsiele Koech (steeplechase) and Silas Kiplagat (1500 meters).
