Athletes Eye World Championships, $1 Million Jackpot in 2009
Another Berlin event will mark the first step toward a possible $1 million pay day for a track and field athlete who competes in the 2009 Golden League series. Each year the IAAF specifies a number of events in which the jackpot is offered. For 2009, the five men’s events include the 110-meter hurdles, javelin throw, the 100- and 400-meter runs plus either the 3000- or 5000- meter run. The women’s events include the high jump, pole vault, 100 and 400 races plus the 100 hurdles.
Any athlete in the designated events who wins his or her event at all six Golden League meets is guaranteed at least a share of the $1 million jackpot. If no athlete goes 6-for-6, athletes who win five Golden League meets will earn a share of a $500,000 secondary jackpot. Again, only athletes in the 10 pre-determined events are eligible for the prizes.
The Golden League meets begin June 14 in Berlin, followed by Oslo (July 3), Rome (July 10), Paris (July 17), Zurich (Aug. 28) and Brussels (Sept. 4).
